American Concrete Pavement Association
Work zone tapers and buffer zones are created by using a series of channelizing devices and/or pavement markings to move traffic out of the normal traffic path. This tool calculates the appropriate minimum taper length for various taper types per the requirements in the FHWA’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). When designing tapers, it should be noted that longer tapers are not necessarily better than shorter tapers because excessively long tapers may encourage sluggish operations and delayed lane changes.
